10 Surprising deadline day transfers

Tevez_3 The transfer deadline has been and gone. Tabloid sports journalists can take their annual leave until January and Martin Jol will have to do some coaching to keep himself busy. Deadline day usually provides a few transfers that raise eyebrows. Here are 10 that Who Ate All The Pies was surprised by for one reason or another.

10 Giuseppe Rossi - Manchester United to Newcastle (loan)
What Sir Alex says normally goes, and Sir Alex said Rossi would not be going anywhere this season. Rossi has got his own way though and moved to Tyneside until January.

9 Jan Kromkamp - Liverpool to PSV Eindhoven
Kromkamp has hardly set the Premier League alight since joining in January. The only surprising thing is Rafa Benitez's readiness to swallow his pride and sell on his own signings.

8 Pascal Cygan - Arsenal to Villareal
Flogging Cygan for £2 million sounds like excellent business to me. It is still a shock that he has gone though - I was beginning to wonder if he was related to Arsene Wenger in some way.

7 Steed Malbranque - Fulham to Spurs
What on earth does Martin Jol want another winger for? Nay, what on earth does Martin Jol need another player for?

6 Antoine Sibierski - Manchester City to Newcastle
The signing of Sibierski lacked the ambition of the Obafemi Martins transfer. Maybe Glenn Roeder wanted to add some bulk and experience to his new striker pool of Ameobi, Martins and Rossi.

5 Colin Kazim Richards - Brighton to Sheffield United
The Blades should have been looking to bring in the likes of Andrew Cole and Antoine Sibierski, not a 20-year-old League One striker.

4 Niko Kranjcar - Hadjuk Split to Portsmouth
Pompey's exploits in the transfer market were obviously overshadowed, but this is a bold move by them. I presume Harry Redknapp has been flashing the fledgling Premier League table around Croatia.

3 Ashley Cole - Arsenal to Chelsea
Well, this was a bolt out of the blue! Who would have thought it... I am actually quite surprised because I thought this deal would never go through and thought Cole would bide his time before moving to Spain.

2 Javier Mascherano - Corinthians to West Ham
Alan Pardew must not have slept a wink last night. I bet Hayden Mullins didn't either!

1 Carlos Tevez - Corinthians to West Ham
Excuse the lack of originality, but this is probably the biggest transfer coup of all time. This guy was being chased by Europe's top clubs and had a £60 million price-tag on his head. How he ended up at Upton Park we probably won't know until the court case!
